Shadowbringers [5.0]: Post may contain potential spoilers.

Southern Crossing

Don’t really understand how this is a southern crossing but lets go with that. Gotta say though this is quite the view. Probably my favorite so far with this expansion.

With nothing else to say. I’ve been considering doing something a tad different. For those unaware Reddit has been experiencing quite a few hiccups with its userbase. I won’t mention too much on the news and events of it. The main thing I wanted to mention was my sudden interest witnessing the debacle.

My thoughts with Reddit

So… To give some context about my history with Reddit. I’m primarily a lurker who has made one single post and one comment in the past 7 years? That one post and comment happened this year. Honestly, I didn’t really start using it more till about 3 years ago. However do the recent protests happening on Reddit. I more or less abandoned Reddit. I’m not particuarly fond of the direction Reddit is going at this stage and interesting alternatives have appeared on my radar. Alternatives like lemmy and kbin.

Now I’ll probably still use Reddit but only out of need since I learned a lot of invaluable information from it and there isn’t that many options. The main thing is that I will no longer touch it out of want.

Reddit Alternatives

Anyways, back onto the alternatives. The two alternative that I had mentioned are the main ones that I have explored a fair amount (well primarily kbin). They seem fairly promising but there’s a slight catch with them. Kbin and Lemmy are part of what many call the “Fediverse”. Basically, it just means that the platforms are able to function independently but are connected with each other so that users of either platform can communicate with each other. Now these two aren’t the only one connected to the “Fediverse”. There are various platforms/servers that are also capable of communicating between each other. The main goal is to be decentralized so that not a single platform can dictate the entire network or even bring down the entire thing.

Now how they communicate between each other work decently, but there’s clearly a lot of growing pains. Anyways, I’ve been considering on setting up my own personal instance with this blog in mind. I have been considering on using Reddit to mention the existence of this blog for a long time, but due to its current issues. It appears best to avoid Reddit, especially the fact that I don’t want others profiting on my own work. Now you might ask “What about Twitter? That seems to be a more appropiate solution than Reddit.” You aren’t wrong but have you seen the issues that Twitter has been dealing with for the past year? True Mastodon is somewhat an alternative to that of Twitter, but I have a hard time grasping how either Twitter or Mastodon functions.

I’m used to forums, I prefer that kind of setup even if its not the most sane solution for me. Regardless, I don’t plan on doing anything crazy at the moment. Personally, I want to experiment a bit with my “home lab” to see how these alternatives functions and determine whether they are even worthwhile to utilize. I’m setting a deadline for myself. If I can’t get a working prototype by post 400. I’m just not going to bother. Thats 66 days from now. Effectively 2 months.

I have no idea where this idea will turn out and its very likely that I’ll abandon it part way through, but this might serve as a perfect method to try and expand the scope of this blog in a way. Since my personal definition of Solitem fits perfectly with this federated network idea.

Anyhow, I hope you folks have a good day/night!

Here’s an edit after finalizing this post:

I really hate how I only had 2 minutes left to post and I spent an hour staring at the screen debating on what to type. Not only that, I had to discover typos in mere seconds after checking to see if the post propogated onto the website. One last thing I want to mention. There’s a reason why I don’t have comments enabled in these posts. I didn’t want to deal with moderation.

Now here I am basically suggesting the idea to myself, on where I have to moderate a forum all because I thought the idea was neat. Oh yeah the other reason why I don’t enable comments is because it uses a thrid-party solution and I don’t want to pay them crap nor allow them to collect user data through the comments.
