Remains of the land

So uh… The crystals if I recall are due to the awakening of Bahamut and its aftermath. Unfortunately, I don’t really got anything for this screenshot. I am rather tired and have been focusing more on the website as a whole, which I will be discussing that down below

Image Format Shenanigans

After hurriedly posted the previous post, I had an idea in regards to images. Originally, I thought a few megabytes isn’t all that bad per image. The problem creeps up when there’s multiple images on the same page like the homepage. I had decided to browse add see what potential options there are for improving image load time. Thats when I learned that image formating has a rather large role in file size. I decided to do a slight experiment. I exported last night’s image from png to webp with an “image quality” of 90 via GIMP. It brought the file size from 2.8 Mb to 215 Kb. A significant difference in file size. Using a website to test load times. The webp image resulted in about 500ms in improvement. Dropping load time to about 845 milliseconds. Overall, this is quite a massive improvement. Now obviously, there is some loss on the image, but I could tweak it to where there would be no noticeable difference. Heck even at image quality 90, comparing the images side by side the differences were small.

Although, I don’t know if this is a wise decision to do on a blog site that currently relies on images for posting. I am going to try a week or two using this new format to see how much an impact it will have.

Screenshot Repository

In regards to making changes to image formats. I still want to show the original screenshots, for the folks that desire it. As such, I am going to look into creating a “Repositoy” of screenshots and have the png formats available to be accessed via there. The only challenge, is that I need to explore what would be the best option to display them.

There is one alternative that I can do. I can display the webp image on the homepage while showing the png image in the main page. It could be a better solution, but I am not entirely certain if its best method to tackle the problem.
